When I was thinking about rooks, I recalled a famous quote:
“The only good Rook is a working Rook!”
- Samuel Reshevsky

But I’d say that this applies to all other pieces as well. Each piece has a greater value only if it isACTIVE:)
Talking about rooks, nowadays even a beginner knows the basic features of rook activity:
  • Rooks are active on open files
  • Rooks are best placed when they are in the seventh (and eighth) rank
  • In that way, they are able to attack the opponent’s pawns (on the seventh rank)
Now, I’ve an interesting question for you. What would you do if you don’t find an open file (or seventh rank) for your rooks?

There is no assurance that your rooks can always find an open file easily. After all, as a chess player, we should calculate everything and be prepared to face anything, right? :) So, how to overcome this problem?
If there is a problem, there will be a solution. Yes, this drawback can be solved easily – there is a way to activate your rooks even if you are not able to place them on the open files (and/or seventh rank).

To discuss this, I’ve invited our guest coach GM Levan Aroshidze. As you may know, GM Levan recently conducted the webinar “Endgame and Middlegame Essentials” for you. Subsequently, I’ve received some feedback from our students, that they enjoy his teaching.

I’m glad that you enjoy his lessons. And that’s why I’ve asked GM Levan to make another instructive video lesson for YOU; and this time, on the topic “Magical Chess Rooks”! :)
